On March 20th the FC LEHIGH ’96, ’97 and ’98 girls turned out to watch the WPS Philadelphia Independence compete against the Univ. of North Carolina Tarheels in their first home friendly match at the USTA complex in Downingtown.
A highlight of the game was when the ’97 girls got to escort UNC out onto the pitch. After the match, both teams were available for autographs and photos. Many lucky girls flocked to the Independence’s former Olympic defender, Heather Mitts to get their jerseys and programs signed.

No shoes, no goals, no problem!  I quickly learned how little equipment is really necessary to play soccer while I was in Granada, Nicaragua.  While the kids there rarely have appropriate footwear, the availability of balls is scarce, and goals are without nets, the enthusiasm is everywhere.  During the week of January 9th, 2010, I was able to volunteer with Soccer Without Borders (or Fútbol Sin Fronteras as it is known there), a non-profit organization whose mission is to use soccer as a vehicle for positive change in the lives of marginalized youth.  The Nicaragua site is geared towards empowering girls through soccer opportunities and life-skills education to meet their potential personally, athletically and in their communities.

NEW NATIONAL PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE TEAM

IN THE LEHIGH VALLEY

F.C.Sonic Lehigh Valleyto take the field in 2010

ALLENTOWN, PA– (02/19/2010) – Today, team officials announced that the Lehigh Valley will once again be represented in the ranks of U.S. minor league soccer in 2010.  Following the successful campaigns by the Pennsylvania Stoners in 2008 and 2009, a new squad will take up the flag of the Lehigh Valley and challenge for the championship of the National PremieSoccer League (NPSL).  The team will be known as F.C. Sonic Lehigh Valley.

“Thanks to the dedication of many people and thanks, primarily, to a new group of enthusiastic sponsors, F.C. Sonic will proudly represent the Lehigh Valley in the highly competitive NPSL,” said Fred Stellato, F.C. Sonic President.

"The Valley's side will be comprised of premier soccer players, many of whom have names familiar to fans in our area,” shared Dave Weitzman, head coach, F.C. Sonic.  “We expect many of last years' Stoners veterans to return to NPSL competition with the Sonic, along with some exciting new players to be selected from open tryouts."  Weitzman was head coach of the 2009 NPSL Pennsylvania Stoners team.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh Athletics has announced the hiring of Eric Lambinus as its new head women’s soccer coach.  Lambinus arrives at Lehigh from nearby Moravian College where he enjoyed a great deal of success as the head women’s and men’s soccer coach during an 11-year span.  He replaces Manny Oudin, who left Lehigh in mid-January to become the Athletic Director at Moravian Academy.  “I would like to thank (Lehigh Dean of Athletics) Joe Sterrett and the athletic staff for welcoming me to the Lehigh community,” Lambinus explained.  “It needed to be the perfect fit for me to consider leaving Moravian College and it became very clear through the search process that Lehigh is that place for me and my family.”

Friends of FC LEHIGH,

It is with my pleasure that I announce that Dave Weitzman was offered and has accepted the General Manager's position at the Iron Lakes Indoor/Outdoor Sports facility. Dave will be responsible for managing the multi-purpose sports field, both indoor & outdoor leagues, as well as other sports programs. As well, Dave's hiring is an indication that the owners of Iron Lakes recognize the outstanding body of work that Dave has acquired while managing roles as a coach, educator, director and leader in the field of soccer. They could not have chosen a better person to manage their mission and vision.

Excitingly (and with great relief!), Dave's new role will allow him to continue his passion and commitment in developing FC LEHIGH into a nationally distinctive youth soccer organization and also continue to coach our youth player’s. In fact, we believe that Dave's position will only benefit FC Lehigh in the long run and we will begin to work towards a mutually beneficial partnership with Iron Lakes.

Please join me in congratulating Dave and his wife Stephanie for this terrific opportunity!

For more information please visit the Iron Lakes website at www.ironlakessportsclub.com .

Warm regards,

Dean Koski
President, FC LEHIGH
